I have been a science teacher for the past 12 years, having taught in Kalona (IA), Silver Spring, Germantown, and Baltimore (MD). My range of teaching and consulting experience from kindergarten to twelfth grade provides me with insight to see how each grade is connected to another, or can be better bridged from one year to another. As a teacher, there has rarely been anything as rewarding as being part of an “Ah-Ha!” moment. It is even more exciting when a former student tells me what they did in my class is helping out them in their current year.
My philosophy is that each child can be reached and each child can learn if given the correct tools, patience, and effort. I firmly believe learning needs a practical setting and lab experiments, observations, and focused research for children to achieve their potential. Textbooks are important and I do use them but having a child build their foundation in the practical sense of the concept through first-hand exposure (whenever possible) makes understanding so much more fluid. For more details about my teaching philosophy, please see the video at (http://app.discoveryeducation.com/core:player/view/assetGuid/F53838C4-FB65-4B4A-A27E-97F74E105F19).
This passion for practical learning set the foundation for me to coordinate The Montgomery County Science Symposium for four years, helping build the event from six to 21 schools; coach students to the Montgomery County Science Fair over eight years; and chair the Achievement Committee at Patterson Park Charter School for four years, organizing the elementary school’s science fair and the middle school’s science night. See my contributions in the following video (http://vimeo.com/41854130).
I LOVE SCIENCE!!! I would like to help any way I can to help you see what our eyes can spy in science!
HobbiesThe primary reason to remove myself from formal teaching (in the classroom) was to have a more flexible schedule for my family. I absolutely love being able to take my children places without having to see how it might fit to my school/job schedule. I love to cook and experiment (literaly) in the kitchen for the family!
If I'm not playing or reading with my children, I'm playing a video game or reading on my own. I have been playing video games since the Atari 2600. My reading interests hover around the fantasy genre and I would REALLY love to get back to comic book collecting (had to cold turkey that habit with the birth of my second child)!!!
I love football (it's FANTASTIC to teach graph making) and would love to get back to tennis on a regular basis.
